Flu Prevention and Vaccines for Children: What Parents Should Know
At Altitude Pediatrics, we want every child to feel supported, valued, and included. National Bullying Prevention Month is an opportunity for families and educators to start conversations about kindness, explore helpful resources, and encourage children to speak up. Below, you’ll find bullying prevention resources and ways to participate in Unity Day.
Where Can Parents and Educators Find Bullying Prevention Resources?
October is National Bullying Prevention Month, a good time to remind parents and educators about the treasure trove of bullying prevention resources available online. The website of the National Bullying Prevention Center is a good place to start. Here, parents and educators can find helpful resources such as videos and publications about bullying and bullying prevention.
What Bullying Prevention Resources Are Available for Kids and Teens?
The National Bullying Prevention Center also hosts two websites purpose built to deliver age-appropriate bullying prevention content to kids and teens, Kids Against Bullying and Teens Against Bullying.
How Can Kids Help Prevent Bullying?
The How Can You Help? section of the Kids Against Bullying website reminds us that bullying almost never occurs in a vacuum, and that the reactions of those who witness bullying can have a big impact.
Kids who witness or experience bullying are not helpless; they can speak up and make it clear that bullying behavior is never acceptable. Courage is contagious, and kids who speak up are not only doing the right thing, but they also make it easier for their peers to speak up against bullying as well.
Kids can communicate a message of kindness and acceptance to their peers who are bullied, letting them know that no one, including them, deserves to be bullied.
Is Telling an Adult About Bullying Tattling?
Finally, kids are reminded that telling an adult is not tattling. Kids should speak out and tell an adult about bullying behavior, especially when that behavior is unsafe physically or psychologically for the person being bullied.
What Is Unity Day, and When Is It This Year?
Since October of 2011, the National Bullying Prevention Center has promoted Unity Day, a single day for people to come together during National Bullying Prevention Month to send a visible message of community, kindness, acceptance, and inclusion.
Wednesday October 21st is Unity Day this year, and participants are encouraged to wear orange to start a conversation and show support for kids who have been bullied and bullying prevention efforts. You can find more information about Unity Day at Unity Day – PACER Center.
