How to Avoid Illnesses in School with Lauren Carei PA-C

With children in school, exposure to germs increases, making classrooms a common place for illnesses to spread. Colds, flu, and stomach bugs can quickly move through student populations, disrupting learning and affecting family routines. Fortunately, there are practical steps parents and kids can take to reduce the risk of getting sick.

1. Avoid germs.

Regularly wash hands with soap and water for 20 seconds, especially before meals and after using the bathroom, or use alcohol-based hand sanitizer. Try not to touch your face and avoid sharing food/drinks and school supplies if possible.

2. Stay healthy

Make sure to eat a well-balanced diet with fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, exercise for at least 60 minutes each day, and get enough sleep at night. Most school aged children need at least 9 hours of sleep every night; teens need at least 8 hours.

3. Keep vaccinations up-to-date

Vaccines help prevent serious illness and make sure your body will be able to fight off certain infections. All children should have annual check ups where these immunizations will be discussed. Influenza vaccines will be offered every fall.

4. Stay home if you are not feeling well

This is an important way to help prevent the spread of germs to others.
