Facts You May Not Know:
- The perinatal period is often referred to as the "fourth trimester" and can last up to 2 years after giving birth. That means that scientists are clear that it takes AWHILE to adjust to the beautiful upheaval of this intense phase of life.
- 75% of mom's don't receive the mental health support that they need in this vulnerable period of time.
- Postpartum depression is the most common (experienced by 1 in 8 women), but postpartum anxiety also affects 10% of new moms and 3-5% of new moms experience symptoms of postpartum obsessive compulsive disorder.
Tips to Help Mothers in The Critical Two Year Window:
- Build a tribe. Find like-minded moms that set down shame and pressure and allow for life-giving, open conversations about the glimmers and hardships of motherhood. Meet somewhere your kids can play, get a coffee and give yourself that hour to process with another safe mom. (Local churches, MOPS, verified Facebook groups would be places to start finding a community).
- Leave your house once a day if possible even if its for a 10 minute walk, listening to music in your car, or a grocery pickup. Your baby is safe in the car and this gives you a time to get a new perspective and feel less isolated.
- Give yourself grace to learn. Your baby doesn't need a perfect parent, your baby needs you!
