Raising Resilient Children with Rickelle Hicks, LMFT

Supporting our children's emotional well-being is crucial in today’s world, especially as we face the growing concerns surrounding youth mental health and suicide prevention. Today our behavioral health specialist, Rickelle Hicks gives tips on raising strong and resilient children.

1: The Importance

Although suicide has become a global public health concern, there are many protective steps parents can take to build resilience and support our children's emotional well-being.

2: Three Factos

Three factors to growing resilient children are

  • Distress Tolerance
  • Emotion Regulation
  • Delayed Gratification

3: Open Conversations

Help your child to know that there are no conversation topics that are off limits. Promoting open and overt communication directly combats and embarrassment that kids may feel about having the more uncomfortable emotions.

4: Emotions

Make the topic of "feelings" a regular part of everyday life so that they can grow their emotional vocabulary and get used to tolerating their distressful emotions.

By building resilience through open communication, emotional awareness, and essential life skills, we can create a foundation of strength and support that will empower our children to navigate life's challenges with confidence and hope.
