When to See Other Pediatric Providers with Lauren Carei PA-C

One of the most common questions new parents ask is when they should take their child to see a pediatric specialist. Our PA-C, Lauren Carei, is here to provide insights and guidance on this important topic!

Your Altitude provider will see your child regularly for well child visits, but there will be times that they recommend you bring your child to see other types of providers in the community as well, including dentists and eye doctors.

It is recommended that all patients see the dentist by 12 months of age or as soon as their first tooth erupts, whichever is sooner. Your provider will perform basic eye exams at all well child visits. They also use a special tool called a photoscreener to take a picture of your child’s eyes yearly starting at age 1. Once your child is old enough to read the pictures or letters on our eye charts (usually around age 4-5 years old), they will use this chart to test their visual acuity instead of the photoscreener.

Your child does not necessarily have to see an eye doctor if you and your provider have no concerns about their vision and he or she passes their annual eye screenings in the office. However, providers will recommend an evaluation by an eye doctor like an optometrist or ophthalmologist if there are any concerns with your child’s vision. If you aren’t sure which dentist or eye doctor to take your child to see, you can contact the office for recommendations!
